South Korean Tech Giant Introduces Advanced Generative AI Tool

Naver, the renowned South Korean internet search company, has unveiled its latest innovation, the HyperCLOVA X, a powerful generative artificial intelligence tool. This new advancement includes an array of services such as CLOVA X, an AI chatbot resembling ChatGPT, and Cue, a generative AI-based search engine akin to Microsoft Bing.

Naver Cloud, the company's cloud unit, spearheaded the launch of HyperCLOVA X. The beta version of CLOVA X has been introduced in both English and Korean languages starting from August 24. Additionally, Cue, anticipated to be available for beta testing in September, is slated for integration into the existing Naver search engine this November.

Tailored for creators and enterprise customers, HyperCLOVA X is an upgraded version of the previous Korean language model, HyperCLOVA, which was introduced in 2021. The company has not only confirmed that HyperCLOVA boasts more than 204 billion parameters but has also kept the specific count of HyperCLOVA X's parameters under wraps. Users are required to register Naver accounts to access and utilize HyperCLOVA X, according to the company's announcement.

Naver boasts a team of over 500 AI experts and proudly stands as one of the five global companies that have developed large language models with parameters exceeding 100 billion. CEO SooYeon Choi conveyed this achievement in a recent letter to shareholders.

Naver Cloud is diligently working on multimodal language models for CLOVA X. These advanced models aim to not only analyze and generate text but also encompass images, videos, and audio. Nako Sung, Head of Technology and Hyperscale AI at Naver Cloud revealed this exciting development during the company's recent conference. The launch of the multimodal language model, named Clova X, is anticipated in the near future.

Naver's strategic move in introducing generative AI comes amidst global tech industry leaders' endeavors to enhance their own generative AI offerings. With players like Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Google with its AI chatbot Bard, Anthropic, Baidu's Ernie Bot, Meta, and Amazon preparing their AI-powered chatbots, competition in the generative AI space is indeed intensifying.

Furthermore, Naver has directed its attention towards regions that remain relatively unexplored by its competitors. The company is unwavering in its commitment to offer tailored AI applications in areas with distinct requirements and sensitive political landscapes, encompassing the Middle East, Spain, and Mexico, alongside its established markets of South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia. To fortify its AI services, Naver is preparing to inaugurate its second data center, GAK Sejong, a facility that will house an impressive 600,000 servers in South Korea this coming November. Noteworthy is Naver's ongoing collaboration with Samsung since last December, focusing on the development of AI chips tailored for hyperscale AI applications.

As Naver's HyperCLOVA X enters the AI arena, it is clear that the company is making significant strides to secure its position at the forefront of the rapidly evolving generative AI landscape.
